Every day we are faced with people that present us obstacles, annoyances and challenges to our forward momentum. I have found that the people who present the greatest obstacle are those furthest removed from my focus. Parking meter attendants; call center employees; security staff all come to mind. They have a rule book (that someone provided them none the less), they interpret the contents and then they feel obligated to thrust their interpretations upon me.
Now I’m not above the law, nor do I ignore policy or regulations. But I simply can’t deal with the little people who present obstacles. Life is too short. So if I don’t have time to put a nickle in the parking meter, I’ll accept and pay the fine. It’s a conscious choice. I decide which obstacles I can accept and deal with and which I can’t. This limits the impact of the little people on my life.
Who are the little people in your life?
Which of the obstacles they present must you accept and which can you venture around, over or through?
That is true empowerment. Life is too short otherwise.
